Environment

Proyectos y Servicios S.A.U. (PROSER) is aware of the effect that the process of projects design, the implementation, control and monitoring of the planned works, has on the natural surroundings. For this reason, since the year 2000, the company has established the company strategy of implementing practices in the process of projects design and in the control and monitoring of the planned works which respect the environment and which go beyond strict compliance with the regulations, since, with proper design and management, the engineering activities related to the sector of the construction can make a significant contribution to lessen or avoid the effects that the projected works tend to generate in the different elements of the environment

To this end, the company has an environmental management system which has the UNE-EN ISO 14.001:2004  certification, and is integrated in the General Management System of the company and is applied in all the works and work centres.

Good environmental practices fall into the following fields:

  • Relationship with Society

    For PROSER, the key to smooth business operation is our relationship with people. Training, service for the people surrounding us, the experiences we share and learn from are all things that shape how we interact with our environment and key factors in the end result of what we do.
  • Atmospheric Emissions

    The proper analysis of the works that are controlled or designed in the projects that are drafted in PROSER involves the determination of main activities that cause emissions of gases, dust and particles into the atmosphere. Thus the main measures are defined in projects to reduce emissions of the most polluting activities, such as the earth movements, the activity and movement of vehicles and machinery, and the demolition of buildings and structures.

    Among the corrective measures in application in this subject, which obligation of implementation is more frequent indicated nowadays, can be named the irrigation of roads and stocks of materials in order to get the reduction of dust generated by the movement of machinery and by other works (earth movement, works with powder materials, …).

    Also, the proper maintenance of machinery is also crucial, in order to reduce the emissions of gaseous pollutants of their engines, as well as to provide for the necessary devices for the retention of potential polluting discharges and their adequate treatment in work. All these aspects are usually incorporated into technical projects by PROSER.

    Also our teams specialized in controlling of work have among its main tasks the strict implementation of the measures to minimize emissions in work activities indicated in the projects.
  • Noise and Vibrations

    The generation of noise and vibration in the works is a temporary problem, whose intensity level varies, although sometimes it can be very high (blasting, demolitions, etc.). However, in the phases of operation of the infrastructure, the noises and vibrations may have significant continuous impacts in the population, in the fauna, and even in the economic activity, generating important effects to residential areas, to health or educational centres, to industries or in using sensitive equipment, etc.

    The main measures against noise and vibration are focused on corrective actions of the levels in the emission (so that noise and vibration may be of lesser magnitude); or can be measures in order to reduce the inconvenience to those affected (adjusting the temporal development of the works to the requirements regarding schedules, dates, uses and customs of the population and the fauna of the area); or, can be corrective measures by using acoustic (or vibrational) shielding measures, when high levels of noise or vibration can not be avoided.

    So, the analysis and the mitigation/correction of the high levels of noise and vibration are an essential part in the technical work, and they are studied, developed and incorporated into the projects drafted by PROSER.

    Detailed acoustic and vibration studies are developed in all the projects, including the preconditions of the working areas and the levels generated during the works, and in the phase of operation of new infrastructure. These studies include field measurements, predictive calculations, and maps of acoustic (or vibrational) levels, depending on the use of infrastructure, etc.
  • Water Spilling

    Water is a highly valuable resource, and the impact caused by infrastructures projected by PROSER, runs the gamut from water consumption to the occupation of river banks, stream diversion and wastewater dumping.

    The main actions, both in the phase of project and in the control of work, are measures developed in order to increase the efficiency in the use of the water, and the reduction of spilling, as well as measures designed to prevent unnecessary effects in the natural water environment. Therefore, this topic is essential in PROSER work, and it is included in all the projects at the beginning of the planning of any infrastructure, adapting its design (and the works) to the characteristics of the surrounding water environment, while minimizing the effects, by anticipating and designing the preventive/protective measures needed to avoid the generation of discharge of pollutants to natural channels, rivers or wetlands.
  • Land Occupation and Soil Pollution or Loss

    Land is a non-renewable resource in the short- and medium-term view and is characterised by its great vulnerability. For this reason it is highly important to use measures to reduce the impact we have on land and soil.
    Some of the corrective measures most frequently included in the projects drafted by PROSER are to restore areas where temporary construction facilities have been located, and to limit site access and occupation in those places. The reduction of the occupation of the infrastructure, adjusting its design for this purpose general, especially the earth movements, is also a fundamental aspect in the projects drafted by PROSER.
  • Use of Natural Resources

    The construction of new infrastructures, whose definition is set in the projects drafted by PROSER, has to face the need to optimise the resource use. Not all the resources consumed can be chalked up to the actual building phase, where the materials required by the project’s design are processed.  We can also optimise our use of resources by managing waste wisely and averting needless losses due to improper storage, aspects which are common practice in projects drafted by PROSER.
  • Waste Creation

    The waste created during construction workings projected or controlled by PROSER is one of the main environmental problems of building, because construction waste contributes largely to environmental degradation. In addition to this fact, dumping space is running short and resource consumption needs to be optimised.

    For these reasons it is vital to carry out good waste management, identify what kind of waste our work is going to create, and forecast the quantity of waste that will have to be dealt with. Also, these measures that are incorporated into all projects of PROSER specify how to deal with each kind of waste during the works, and also their place of destination, depending on its type. Finally, the projected measures include the definition of the process needed in the achievement of the environmental and administrative approvals for the waste disposal/recycling points.
  • Land Use Planning (biological diversity)

    In addition to abiotic factors (water, atmosphere, soil), the construction workings drafted by PROSER, also has a clear impact on biotic factors, such as the plant and animal species living in the environment where the construction site is located. Biodiversity conservation is another one of the big environmental challenges that hold PROSER concern.

    The projected measures focus especially on the physical protection of the natural values of the environment, as well as on the location of the working areas away of problematic areas, and on the temporary adaptation of the planning of the work to the life cycles of the surrounding environment species.
